The Malleus itself is by no means an original work, rather bringing together in one place a whole series of past opinions and judgements on the nature of malificiendum or harmful magic.

Kramer failed in his attempt to obtain endorsement for this work from the top theologians of the Inquisition at the Faculty of Cologne, and they condemned the book as recommending unethical and illegal procedures, as well as being inconsistent with Catholic doctrines of demonology.

A lack of a proper index or bibliography in the book itself is a crime of omission, but regardless, the book and footnotes lend to an ease of understanding in the moment of reading, rather than a flip back and forth between the book and its endpapers.
